How Baldwins’ Hardware is Made

First Baldwin will hand-select a raw brass bar to work on. They make sure it is durable and reliable so it will last through weathering, corrosion, and usage.

Second Baldwin uses an age-old method of making the hardware. They use “heat forging, which involves beating r pounding the metal into a special die.” Brass billets are heated at 1300 degrees before forging. Then the process begins with detail-oriented work and in-depth procedures to ensure quality. It takes 200 tons of force “to forge brass billets into knobs, lever, and handlesets.”

The last couple of stages involve trimming. Baldwin “Operators use a stamping press to trim all the extra metal left after the forging process.” They the brass will be shined and smoothed by a machine that will dispose of oxidation that could accrue during the heat forging process.

In the final process, Baldwin uses finish to give a “glossy to matter” look. Depending on the demands, this may also include tiny adjustments to fit the needs.

Baldwin makes high-quality, custom brass locks that competitors are unable to attain because “of the superior level of Lifetime PVD finishing.” Baldwin locks are made from scratch with a hand-picked brass bar and are finished their work with a “glossy to matter” look with any further adjustments as needed.
